How to convert mg to mL

Divide the mass in milligrams by the concentration in milligrams per milliliter. A concentration tells you how much of the measured ingredient is present in a stated volume of solution.

If your label gives the mass per 5 mL, 10 mL, or another volume, first divide that mass by the label volume. The calculator performs this step for you and displays the resulting concentration in mg/mL.

A worked example

For an example solution labeled 50 mg per 5 mL, the concentration is 50 ÷ 5 = 10 mg/mL. To convert a user-specified mass of 25 mg, divide 25 by 10. The corresponding volume is 2.5 mL.

In reverse, 2.5 mL × 10 mg/mL = 25 mg. The numbers in this example illustrate the arithmetic only. They are not instructions for using any medicine or product.

Why 1 mg does not always equal 1 mL

There is no universal conversion between mass and volume. At 1 mg/mL, a 1 mg amount corresponds to 1 mL. At 10 mg/mL, that same mass corresponds to 0.1 mL. A stronger solution contains more mass of the measured ingredient in the same volume.

Concentration

Use this when the label tells you the mass of an ingredient in a volume of liquid, such as mg per mL or mg per 5 mL.

Ingredient mass ÷ liquid volume

The result refers to that ingredient. It does not describe the total mass of the liquid and everything dissolved or suspended in it.

Use this when you need the volume of an entire substance from its total mass and you have its density.

Total substance mass ÷ volume

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few things worth clearing up.

How many mL is 100 mg?

You need a concentration or density before there is an answer. For an example concentration of 20 mg/mL, 100 mg corresponds to 5 mL. For 50 mg/mL, it corresponds to 2 mL. Enter the value from your specific label; do not borrow a concentration from a different product.

My label says mg per 5 mL. What do I enter?

Enter the milligram amount in “Mass on label” and 5 in “Volume on label,” with mg and mL selected. If your label says 50 mg per 5 mL, the normalized concentration is 10 mg/mL. Both parts of the label matter.

Can I use micrograms or grams?

Yes. Select mcg, mg, or g for the label mass and for the mass you are converting. You can also use mL or L for volume. The calculator converts the units before applying the concentration. Always check that the selected unit matches the number you entered.

Can this calculator tell me how much medicine to take?

No. It converts an amount you already have using the concentration you enter. It does not determine a dose, schedule, suitability, or route of administration. If an instruction or label is unclear, confirm it with a pharmacist or clinician before relying on a conversion.

Does it work with percentages, drops, or syringe units?

This tool uses explicit mass and volume units. A percentage can mean mass per mass, mass per volume, or volume per volume, so it cannot be used without knowing its basis. Drops and device units also require additional information. Obtain the correct mg/mL concentration and mL quantity for your context.

Why does density mode give a different result?

Density measures the mass of the entire substance per volume. Concentration can measure just one ingredient in that substance. For an illustrative density of 1 g/mL, 1 mL has a total mass of 1,000 mg. That does not tell you how much active ingredient the liquid contains.

How are results rounded?

The calculation uses the entered values before display rounding. You can select 4, 6, 8, or 10 significant figures. Small decimal results keep a leading zero, such as 0.125 mL. Display precision does not imply that a measuring device can deliver that precision.

Are my entries private?

The app performs calculations in your browser without sending input values to a calculator service. It does not use analytics, save entries to local storage, or require an account. You choose whether to copy, print, or download your results.
