What does “mg per 5 mL” mean?
It describes how much of a particular ingredient is present in a 5 mL volume. For example, 50 mg per 5 mL means that each 5 mL portion contains 50 mg of the stated ingredient. It does not mean 50 mg in every milliliter.
These two label expressions describe the same concentration. Rewriting the ratio per 1 mL makes it easier to compare concentrations and to use the mg to mL calculator.
How to convert a label to mg/mL
- Read the paired values. Find the mass and the volume attached to that mass. Do not combine an ingredient amount with an unrelated bottle size.
- Check the units. Convert the mass to mg and the volume to mL, or select those units in the converter above.
- Divide mass by volume. The result is the amount of the stated ingredient per milliliter.
- Check by multiplying back. Multiply your mg/mL result by the original label volume. You should recover the original mass.
The FDA's explanation of strength expressions distinguishes the amount of an ingredient from the corresponding amount of solution. That is the relationship this converter uses. It does not interpret a prescription or choose an amount to use.
Three arithmetic examples

For the last row, convert 0.2 g to 200 mg first. A result of 0.002 would be in g/mL; labeling it mg/mL would create a thousandfold error.
“Per 5 mL” is not a bottle volume or an instruction
The volume after “per” belongs to the concentration ratio. A bottle can contain many such portions. A separate “100 mL” package-size statement tells you the total liquid volume, unless the label explicitly pairs that volume with a total ingredient amount.
Likewise, a concentration alone does not tell you how much liquid someone should use. For medicine, follow the specific label and an amount already supplied by a clinician or pharmacist. If the directions and concentration seem inconsistent, confirm them before converting.
From concentration to a volume

For an illustrative solution at 10 mg/mL, a separately specified 25 mg amount corresponds to 2.5 mL. Changing the concentration changes that result. This is why a search for a bare value such as “25 mg to mL” cannot have one universal answer.

What this label converter does not infer
- Density: the total mass of a liquid is different from the mass of one ingredient in it.
- Percentages: a percent can refer to different mass or volume bases. Obtain the explicit mass-per-volume value for your context.
- Powders and reconstitution: an amount per container does not supply a liquid concentration by itself. Follow the product's prepared-concentration information.
- Device markings: drops and device-specific units are outside this tool's mass and volume inputs.

The converter uses the label's mass-to-volume ratio and the unit factors in BIPM's SI prefixes: 1 g = 1,000 mg, 1 mg = 1,000 mcg, and 1 L = 1,000 mL. It displays six significant figures without changing the unrounded calculation.
